Filing Single/0......?

My filing status was changed from Married/0 to Single/0 back in late January (I don't remember changing) and didn't realize until now on my W-2. Problem is no taxes were taken out ALL year! Isn't Single/0 the highest deduction or am I mis-informed? How can this be????? I am a single parent and normally get a large refund and now I feel doomed with probably owing an enormous amount.....Help!?

Filing Single/0......?
First off, you're talking about your withholding status, not your filing status. If your withholding status was Single-0 the highest amount of tax would have been withheld from your pay.

Your employer can show you the copy of the Form W4 that you signed. It will reflect the withholding status that you claimed.

If no tax was withheld from your pay your income must be quite low -- low enough that you wouldn't have any tax liability anyway. You probably qualify for the EITC which would account for the large refund that you are accustomed to receiving.

Without knowing what your income was and how much if any tax was withheld it's not possible to tell you much else. If you wish, post the amounts in boxes 1 and 2 on your Form W2 and maybe I can give you a more complete explanation.
Reply:yes it is the highest paid tax rate you just have to file then you will know what you will get back or if you will owe them but good luck as being a single mom big hugss and lots of love to you for being a single mom
Reply:Single/0 is the highest rate of tax withholding.

Maybe you just didn't earn enough?

If you think you owe, then for the next year see if your employer can keep the single/0 and then take MORE out. You will have to specify exactly how much more.

Did you owe taxes last year when you filed? If not and your income didn't change much in 2006 from what you earned in 2005, then most likely your tax due won't change much.
Reply:If you made that much, and your W-4 said single 0, then they should have been taking taxes taken out. Didn't you notice when your paycheck suddenly went up a lot? It's possible that your W-4 was filled out wrong, or that the person putting it into the payroll system where you work messed up. In any case, it's too late to change that for last year, although I'd check with them right away and get it corrected for future paychecks.

This year, don't count on a large refund. Since you're a single parent, you are probably eligible for the Earned Income Credit, which will help some if you owe taxes. The EIC would probably make up for what you might owe, but you won't get a lot back.

If you owe (unlikely) but aren't able to pay it all right now, then file anyway by April. The IRS will contact you about a payment plan. They do this all the time, so you won't be in trouble except for having to pay what you owe.

Good luck.
Reply:You will probably not owe much if anything. You are a single parent and I am guessing that if you got a HUGE refund in the past, you should have enough child credits etc. to end up not oweing. Plus you do not have to file single/0. File Head of household and with your dependent(s) this should take care of it for you. Also, it is possible they didn't take anything out because you haven't made enough this year. Sometimes job places can be funny with this. We have experienced this in the past without any pending doom looming over our heads and without anything in oweing. What about earned income credit? Child care? Any other deductions? Unless you are of a higher income you can take advantage of these things and come out fine, maybe even a little ahead. We didn't have much taken out this year and have a nice, little, return. Blessings
